For those who have homeowner's insurance or renter's insurance, then it may or may not cover water damage to your dwelling. It's typical for traditional insurance policies not to cover water damage. This usually ends up in selecting policy you need to purchase separately under a different policy. The location of where you reside will likely influence your decision to buy this insurance.

Even if you have water damage coverage, it may not cover all sorts of water damage. For example, there are a few policies which cover rain flooding and sewer backup, but they don't cover accidental water damage or burst pipes. In addition, you need to understand what your insurance company will replace in the event that your possessions become ruined. Some policies will restore electronics and furnishings while some will only compensate you for damage done to your house's structure.

What you are going to do is file a claim with your insurance carrier. Then you should wait for their claims adjuster to go to your property and assess the water damage. Before they arrive, your insurance company may tell you to put boards on your windows or doors in order to prevent any further damage. For those who have any possessions which are still in good shape, you will be advised to store them somewhere safe.

As for everything else that is damaged, you will be advised to leave it alone and not touch any of it. The adjuster will have to see exactly what has been damaged so that they can accurately process your claim.

But before the adjuster even arrives, you should take it upon yourself to snap photographs of the damaged areas. You might want to have as much proof of the water damage as you can to back up your claim. Don't clean up or throw away anything or make repairs until after the adjuster has completed their review.

Once the adjuster has completed assessing the water damage, you'll find out within 2 weeks whether or not your claim has been approved. You normally have to wait for the insurance claim to be approved before you are allowed to start throwing away items and make repairs to your home.
